Why does prematurity awareness matter? We asked Dr. Kjersti Aagaard, maternal fetal medicine physician and a national physician advisor at HCA Healthcare. Each year in the US, 1 in 10 babies is born preterm. Prematurity impacts far too many moms and babies and is influenced by a variety of social and community factors. 1️⃣Preterm babies may have more health problems than babies born later. These include problems with their brain, lungs, heart, eyes, and other organs. 2️⃣Some preterm babies must spend time in a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to get special medical care. 3️⃣Preterm birth can lead to lifelong health problems (e.g., cerebral palsy, intellectual disabilities, chronic lung disease, blindness, and hearing loss). Together, with HCA Healthcare, we help ensure families are supported during one of the most critical times in their lives.
