Examining the roots of how agriculture has been practiced on lands within the United States through time reveals complex visions of land management from diverse communities. Since time immemorial, Pueblos — communities of Indigenous peoples in the southwestern U.S. — have cultivated complex agricultural systems. Today, Healer Brophy Toledo and War Chief José Toledo of the Jemez Pueblo continue these traditions. They contain many core principles of regenerative agriculture: the concept of reciprocity, a deep connection to land and an understanding of how to balance yield with practices that sustain its continued abundance, like keeping living roots in the ground year-round; minimizing soil disturbance and embracing ecological diversity through integrating trees, animals and complimentary crops into a farming system. In the Mississippi Delta, Trentis Allen is pairing multi-generational knowledge with modern-day innovation. Managing family land held for decades by his father and eight siblings, he is building partnerships that support his family farm’s transition from an industrial operation to a regenerative, organic farm, enriching a legacy that he hopes will benefit the land and his family long into the future. Through our Food for Tomorrow initiative with PepsiCo, #NatGeoExplorer Caitin Ochs is capturing these stories and their role in the modern regenerative agriculture movement, showing why, to help protect our planet’s future, we need to support farmers as well as the ecosystem around them to scale regenerative agriculture.
