At the time of her diagnosis, Khari had the only known case of Lafora disease in her home state of Alabama. Lafora is a rare condition with no known cure, which causes frequent seizures and leads to neurodegeneration. The vast majority of rare diseases are not well understood. Patient-led organizations like Chelsea’s Hope accelerate research for conditions like Lafora by building research networks of multi-disciplinary experts, identifying patient-focused priorities in research, developing registries and working to find treatments and cures for rare disease. “If you are a person with a rare disease, you do not have to be alone.” When Ricky Safer was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis in 2005, there was very little information and support available for those living with this rare liver disease. That’s how PSC Partners Seeking a Cure was started.
